Curriculum at The Willows School
The Willows School is an ‘I can’ school that strives to offer all of our pupils a broad and balanced curriculum that allows them to work towards ambitious endpoints. Subject leaders draw from the National Curriculum in their subject areas to decide upon these endpoints and plan a curriculum that will best suit the needs of our learners.
Preparing for Adulthood and Life Skills are at the heart of what we do as a school, so all subject leaders ensure that these vital skills are woven throughout their curriculum offer. We want our pupils to leave The Willows as happy, healthy, well-rounded young people who are as independent as possible and fully prepared for the next stage in their journey – whatever that might involve.
Our school drivers are linked to the 4 Preparing for Adulthood strands and each department ensures that the curriculum allows all pupils to work towards these.
The curriculum is designed to ensure it meets the needs of all learners, making clear links to the real world. Staff do this through careful consideration of curriculum content and the use of EHCP targets and outcomes to link their curriculum learning to the relevant needs of our learners.
Pupils experience a mix of structured lessons and practical hands-on experiences which are delivered through numerous specialised areas in school, e.g. vocational centre, science laboratory, Life Skills bungalow, to ensure that the curriculum is implemented in an effective way.
Our Personal Development calendar gives our pupils the opportunity to take part in a range of enrichment opportunities that provide experiences linked to local or global events, reminding our young people of their roles as citizens within their community.
As pupils move through The Willows School, they experience a varied curriculum offer which is adapted year to year, class to class and pupil to pupil, to ensure it remains accessible, ambitious and progressive for all.
We want to ensure that our pupils are given every opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and independence to be successful as they move into adulthood, gaining qualifications and accreditation that is appropriate for them and their future pathway.
