Curriculum

Design and technology

Design and technology is an ‘I can’ subject, designed to be inclusive, challenging and meaningful for all our young people. The learning environment encourages learners to recognise that they have a voice and are valued.

The academic year is divided into three disciplines, to incorporate textiles, resistant materials and electronics. Individual projects have a design, make and evaluate series of tasks, allowing learners to progress through each element while building skills in technical competence, logic, problem solving and self-confidence.

DT provides learners with the means to communicate their ideas, thoughts and feelings about their own identity and their place within the world around them. The aim of Design and Technology as a subject is to teach learners to transfer what they are learning into their own lives and the wider community. They are taught how different materials impact the planet and how they can contribute to protecting while appreciating the world and the environment around them.

Health and Safety is the cornerstone of every project and task, with the expectation that every learner will develop personal health and safety routines. In turn this gives them life-long learning and skills when using tools and equipment safely in school and at home.

A culture of independence and resilience is fostered and learners will be able to organise, sequence, use a wide variety of practical / life skills in different situations with different people to become more self-sufficient and prepared for adulthood.
