Horticulture

Horticulture at The Willows provides a green space for pupils, some of whom do not have access to one outside of school. This subject encourages responsibility, environmental awareness, and resilience, making it ideal for pupils who enjoy nature, problem-solving, and working outdoors. Our learning spaces include an outdoor classroom, a raised bed garden, a polytunnel and an orchard, in addition to having a shed stocked with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and a range of gardening equipment and supplies.

With its hands-on, sensory-rich activities, Horticulture supports a wide range of learning styles and abilities. Depending on seasonal interests, individual circumstances and weather conditions, we broadly educate on topics ranging from plant care and food cultivation, to understanding plant biology, soil health, and sustainable gardening techniques. Horticulture builds a foundation for work in areas such as landscape gardening, greenhouse management, floristry, environmental conservation, and supported employment in the land-based sector. Our pupils are therefore empowered to grow their potential not only through an enjoyable hobby, but by also developing valuable life skills, career pathways, and a fulfilling future.
