At The Willows School, our computing ethos is built on curiosity, creativity and confidence. We believe that every child should be empowered to understand, navigate and shape the digital world in which they live. Our curriculum fosters computational thinking and problem-solving from the earliest stages, enabling pupils to become creators – not just consumers – of technology.

From Lower School, children are introduced to the foundations of computing: understanding algorithms, exploring everyday applications and engaging with coding through interactive platforms such as ScratchJr. This early exposure nurtures logical thinking and creativity.

In Middle School, pupils progress to using variables, inputs and more complex coding concepts. Through creating games and animations in programs like Scratch, children learn that perseverance and resilience are essential to success – embracing the idea that every “First Attempt In Learning” is a step towards mastery.

By Upper School, learners are ready to apply their skills to real-world contexts. They code physical devices such as the BBC Micro:bit, producing games, music and animations while sharing their work for others to use. At this stage, pupils also begin accreditation pathways, developing functional ICT skills that prepare them for future study, careers and life beyond school.

Across all phases, online safety is central to our ethos. Pupils are taught to identify suspicious emails, recognise fraudulent websites and choose safe online spaces for communication and play. With regular reminders, assemblies and parental involvement, we ensure that our entire community promotes digital well-being.

Our approach is underpinned by the belief that technology should inspire awe and wonder. We encourage pupils to take risks, learn from mistakes and embrace innovation. By connecting classroom learning to future technologies and careers, we prepare our children to thrive in a world where 65% of future jobs do not yet exist. Through computing, we aim to create not just competent users of technology, but imaginative thinkers and responsible digital citizens.
